Miniature Betta Portraits by Hava Gurevich

Tiny Muse began with a rescue Betta named Sasha. When he came into my life, I had no idea that this tiny fish would become such an important source of inspiration. What started as a single portrait grew into an ongoing fascination with the color, movement, and individuality of these remarkable fish.

Created specifically for Gallery 1624’s micro gallery space, Tiny Muse brings together a new collection of miniature paintings featuring fish beloved by their owners and shared with me through the online Betta community. Every portrait is based on a real fish, each with its own personality, story, and devoted human admirer.

While the paintings themselves are miniature, the fish are portrayed with a life-size presence. Working at this scale creates an intimate viewing experience, inviting visitors to look closely and appreciate the details that make each Betta unique.

Over the years, painting Bettas has connected me with a wonderful community of people who care deeply about these often-overlooked animals. This exhibition is my way of honoring those connections and acknowledging the unexpected paths that inspiration can take.
